My Picks for Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week #pcbw

This year, I am making a concerted effort to go to Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week events. I’d heard of PCBW in the past, I just never made an effort to go to anything. Mr. Beez and I love beer, and I at least have developed enough familiarity with bills to be able to navigate descriptions of unfamiliar beers to pick those I will likely enjoy. I like light-to-medium beers, that are sweet or citrusy. I’m a big fan of Belgian style beers, wheat beers, red ales, and all kinds of fruity beers. I do not like porters, stouts, generally any kind of dark beer, and I do not like beers that are heavy on the hops (no thank you on the IPA’s).

Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week starts on Friday, and I spent too much time today picking through the calendar and now…YOU GUYS I CANNOT WAIT. Craft Beer Week is a time to explore, and I’m not going to limit myself to the usual types I like.   I wish I could make it to every single event, but since I (1) have to work, (2) need to avoid developing a beer belly, and (3) do not have Hermione’s time turner, I will not be able to be at everything. I’ve gone through the event listing to pick my favorites. This is my PCBW Wish List, but I will likely only make it to a few (and even the ones compatible with my schedule are subject to me possibly bailing due to work obligations, general exhaustion, etc.).

Monday

This morning has pretty much started off in shambles. Baby Beez was setting records for monster behavior last night, which carried over to this morning. In addition to screaming, flailing, and yelling “NO! NEVER!” she has also taken to screaming “I DON’T WANT YOU IN THIS FAMILY!” or “I DON’T WANT TO BE IN THIS FAMILY.” The way things are going with you kid, the feeling is mutual.

Also, it is springtime. Which means our normally-grouchy parrot is instead grouchy and nesty and broody and wanting to destroy everything in her path. She snarled and lunged and bit at me this morning when I went to take her out of the cage. I’ve contemplated just getting her a boyfriend, but Mr. Beez doesn’t think adding more parrots to the loud, crazy house is a very good idea. If you come over to our house in the next month or two, mind your toes. She likes to bite them.

This of course means that I came to work– as in the practice of law, as in litigation, as in people fighting with each other all day every day– and felt like it was a peaceful haven of tranquility.

This is all a very long prelude to the actual topic of my post. I hit a point during our vacation where I just realized I don’t like how I am feeling. I’ve put on weight, and I can feel it all over my body. I can feel it everywhere, and it makes it harder for me to move. I want to shed the weight, but more importantly, I want to shed this feeling. Other than “gross” I’m not sure how else to describe it. I’ve read about how a vegan diet has helped people like Bill Clinton, Cory Booker and even local veghacker Leah Lizarondo with their general health and wellness.

So on our last day of our vacation, I decided I’m ditching it and going vegan. I have been using the 21 Day Vegan Kickstart as a meal planning source. I was a vegetarian for many years before being pregnant with Baby Beez, so I’m already comfortable with meat-free cooking. The only real change that takes much thought is replacing eggs and milk in pasta and baked goods. (Butter is easy, see: Earth Balance).

With the exception of discovering a dozen macarons in the freezer that I just couldn’t bear to throw away, I’ve stuck to a vegan diet for the last week, and I have to say it’s been relatively uneventful. I do like that I’m eating far more whole fruits and vegetables, and just ignoring a lot of processed stuff I might have otherwise turned to for a quick snack.  I knew eating vegan would require me to do more cooking, but I’ve been surprised how fast and easy the cooking has been. In addition to the Kickstart recipes, I’ve got The Garden of Vegan and The Veganomicon at home, so I’ve got plenty of recipes at my fingertips.

Over the last several months, I’ve gone through my cookbooks on the weekend, and picked 3 or 4 dinner recipes to make during the week, and then we eat those and their leftovers throughout the week. Eating things I cook is easy peasy. The biggest challenge is/will be restaurants, but I believe it will be easy enough to get places to make a salad full of vegetables, with oil & vinegar.

So that’s that.

Hi, everyone! My name is Sarah and while I normally post at Pittsburgh & Pearls, I am so excited to be writing a guest post for Beezus Kiddo. This is my first time participating in the great Pittsburgh guest post swap event, so it’s really interesting for me as a newer blogger to be working with some more seasoned talent. Beyond my (very obvious) love of brunch, I have a penchant for fashion, travel, fitness, and all things beauty.

As a millennial and a college student, I take my brunching very seriously. To me, brunch is a verb, and it’s my favorite meal of the week. In all honesty, I was never a breakfast person. My parents and grandma tried to drag me along to a brunch buffet for years, (which is now my favorite restaurant) but I was stubborn and refused to eat anything besides bacon, mac and cheese or Belgian waffles. Best. Combo. Ever. What can I say; I was a picky eater (slash still am, to some degree).

Flash forward 4-ish years, and maybe it’s the college student in me, but I’ll say yes to any excuse to get off campus and get some really good food. That being said, without further adieu, my top 3 favorite places for 3 different budgets.

1. The Dor-Stop ($)

If the fact that it was featuered on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives doesn’t sell you on visiting already, it’s been featured all over Pittsburgh media for almost 30 years. According to Pittsburgh Magazine, it’s the home of the best pancakes in the Burgh, and I’d definitely agree. Beyond your typical diner fare, the Dor-Stop puts creative spins on your breakfast favorites, including specialty hotcakes like the banana chocolate chip pancakes. It comes with a warning though, it might be really tricky to figure out exactly what sounds the best when the menu also features a variety of omelets, stuffed French toast, and other mouthwateringly good items.

2. Waffles Incaffeinated ($-$$)

Everybody loves a good waffle. I grew up on chocolate chip Eggos but I’d like to think that I have a much more refined taste now, graduating to eateries that feature “specialty waffles” which seem more like dessert than breakfast food (and I’m not complaining). Whether you like super-sweet or savory, there will definitely something on the menu for you. Waffles Incaffeinated also serves sandwiches, salads, crepes and omelets (oh-my-lettes!) if waffles just aren’t your cup of tea. And a quick word to the wise: Waffles Incaffeinated uses NoWait, which allows you to check wait times and allows you to get in line from virtually anywhere. It’s been known to feature longer wait times, so consider downloading the app for your convenience!

Personal Favorite: Megaberry Waffle, Funky Monkey Waffle, Strawberry Nutella Crepe

3. Grand Concourse ($$$)

Nothing makes me happier than being able to dress up, drive downtown and eat a lot of food. My family has been going to the Grand Concourse for years; it holds a special place in my heart as the location of my parents’ first date. Everyone knows that family history pairs really well with copious amounts of ham, but I’d recommend it to anyone. Beyond a buffet that features food choices for both the foodies and the pickiest eaters, the atmosphere makes your experience that much better. And it has outdoor seating, which is always a winner in my book. If waffle bars, omelet bars, brunch bar, salmon and tuna bars and fresh donuts sound great to you too, you should definitely check it out.

Wednesday, in No Particular Order

When you have lots and lots of inspiration (read: caffeine and time), it’s easy to churn out blog posts. My recent blogging hiatus has not been due to lack of desire, but lack of the time or energy to devote to more than 30 seconds of leisure writing at any given time. With the annual #GBE just a week away, I have to drum up some creativity for my guest post…I don’t even know what I’ll be writing about yet. And since I don’t have the energy right now to do any focused posts on dedicated topics, instead I will treat you (read: torture you) with this– a list of the things on my mind this Wednesday, in no particular order:

1. Family Time

My dad and stepmom just left this morning from a 4 day visit to Pittsburgh. It was a super nice visit. We did lots of excellent cooking and drinking wine. We made and devoured Triple Chocolate Ice Cream (with chopped up Sarris Chocolate bars in it, delicious). We even played Cards Against Humanity, which was all the more hilarious because my stepmom didn’t know what half of the cards meant and had to keep googling things.

The first few days they were here it was cold and wintery, but yesterday was one of those gorgeous Pittsburgh spring days, and we got to go to the park for a bit.

Mr. Beez and I had some work obligations so we were not able to stay home with them the whole time they were here, but I think there is something special about them getting to have time with Baby Beez when we are not there. I’m glad to give them that time together. We also talked about Baby Beez spending time with them up in Oregon during summers, and they are all for it. Although this summer’s plans are all mapped out, I am looking forward to future summers where she’ll get to go visit them, and go camping, fishing, hiking and all kinds of outdoorsy things, and just generally have a nice time together.

We have more family time coming up soon, as we are shortly leaving for a family vacation in Playa del Carmen. We’ll get to hang out with the grown up family members, while Baby Beez will swim and build sandcastles with a bunch of cousins.  I’ve got my audiobooks loaded in my phone, my sunscreen and hat packed, and cannot wait to sit in the sun and do nothing for several straight days.

2. Round and Round

We bought Baby Beez a season pass to the Schenley Carousel again this year. I would have liked to go a few more times last year, but I still think it was well worth the money. It was fun to take her to the carousel, and let her ride it over and over and over and over. We also got snacks at the nearby food vendors, would go over to the library to pick out some books and movies, then go back to the carousel to ride it around another half dozen times.  I’m excited for the carousel’s opening in April, and hope to take her there a whole lot of times this summer.

3.  Bartram House

Mr. Beez and I went to brunch at Bartram House bakery a little while back.  The bakery case is gorgeous, so many beautiful cupcakes, pastries and bars. I had a breakfast burrito full of fresh veggies and cup after cup of hot coffee. I feel like Bartram House is the fresh, local cafe that a certain nationwide bakery-themed eatery is trying to be. While I do like that certain nationwide eatery, there is a something lost in all that homogeneity  Bartram House has all these amazing baked goods, with the authentic personality to boot. And to boot, you get the option of having a croissant as the “bread” side with your breakfast. Yassssss! We really enjoyed this place and are excited to bring Baby Beez for our next visit.

4. Blogga Dinna

I visited Chaz & Odette with blogging friends a little while back. We went scheduled a dinner for a Sunday night, which we did not realize is jazz night. On jazz nights, they feature a jazz band and a limited menu of small dishes. While it didn’t quite fit the goal we had of long-catching-up type conversations, the place did have a pretty cool vibe. I would like to go back there for a date night with Mr. Beez, and I think it would be a fun place to go for something a little different than the usual drinks-and-apps type outing.  On the whole, the food was great. The chicken, in particular, was expertly seasoned. I have a very vivid memory of it and would love to go back to try more of their dishes.

5. Time to Bake

Mr. Beez has found a new interest in learning to cook, which is JUST FINE BY ME THANKYOUVERYMUCH. Our Temple has recently offered some cooking classes, and we took a hamentaschen baking class the other day. Mr. Beez loves hamentaschen, and this was  fun, different activity for us to do together. It was a small class in our temple’s kitchen, and was just a couple hours on a weeknight. I had been promising Mr. Beez that cooking is easy, and I think he saw from this class that it can be pretty simple. As an added bonus, we got to go home with a whole bunch of treats!

6.  My pores. My pores. My lovely lady pores.

I loooove me some makeup sampler boxes, and Benefit is by far my favorite makeup brand.  I recently dug a sample size of “The POREfessional” out of my giant tub o’makeup. It feels nice on my skin and makes it look good, but I can’t help but be puzzled that pores are something we can be self-conscious about now? Why do I need to hide or minimize my pores? Pores are something to be worried about? Pores are just part of your face. I recently saw an article in Allure about some fancy lady actress saying the part of her body that she is most self conscious about is her pores? Huh???? Anyway, I am not worried about people seeing my pores because that is ridiculous, BUT Pores No More is actually a nice product and makes my skin look nice, separate and apart from my pores. I LIKE MY PORES. But the product isn’t bad, if I do say so myself.

Small business shopping– not just for #ShopSmallSaturday

The recent shuttering of Marty’s Market and announced relocation (or closing) of Pittsburgh Public Market have me sad, but even more so, have me frustrated.  Mr. Beez went to the liquidation sale at Marty’s last weekend, and he told me how people kept going up to the owner, Regina, saying how much they loved the place and how sad they were to see it closing, but you could just see it in her eyes, the thought that “That’s very nice, but if you loved it so much, shopping here would have kept it open!”

#ShopSmallSaturday is a cute idea and well intentioned, but it has facilitated a “Shop Small” mindset that is restricted to novelty, or increasingly, self-publicized social media posts announcing “LOOK I AM SUPPORTING THE SMALL BUSINESSES!”  Yes, I too am guilty of such self-congratulation. (Here and here). Small businesses do not survive, much less thrive, on a single day of celebrated shopping or blog posts filled with praise.  Small businesses survive on dollars.

At the beginning of 2015, I set a resolution to transition all my grocery shopping to the East End Food Co-Op.  This goal was grounded in several reasons, (1) it is a local, member owned, community supported business and I decided I needed to step up my real, dollars and cents, support of that endeavor, (2) the principles that the co-op applies in selecting the products it offers are consistent with my own principles concerning health, fairness to employees, and local-focus, so shopping there dramatically cuts down (if not eliminates) my need to sort through information about the brands and products themselves, and (3) Mr. Beez has long been on the board of the co-op and its success is important to him, so I wanted to step up our financial support from occasional shopping to regular shopping.

At a month in, I found that I had to make some tweaks to how I shopped, but that otherwise it was all going swimmingly.  Now, over a year in, the co-op has become our regular grocery store and the thought of shopping at the normal chain places is exhausting to me.  Sure, occasionally I have to shop at a larger grocery chain because there are things that the co-op just doesn’t have (see: ingredients for buffalo chicken dip).  But the mainstays of our diet now come from the co-op.

Throughout 2015, we continued to make changes to make sure that our dollars stayed in the community.  I guess the co-op principles really struck a chord, and we applied those principles more broadly in our lives.  For the last several years we have had summer farm shares.  In 2015 we got our fruit & vegetable farm share with Clarion River Organics, and then expanded to also get a beef share. I’m not going to fill this post up with links about factory farming, you can go find that yourself. But I decided that if we were going to continue to cook meat in the house, I could at least make sure that I was getting it from local farmers, focused on the quality of life of the animals.

We also made the Pittsburgh Public Market a regular part of our lives– every Saturday we go there for lunch after Baby Beez’ ballet class is over.  She gets her chocolate milk from Family Farm Creameries and a hot dog from Bull Dawgs.  Mr. Beez gets his pint of Red Star Kombucha, and we pick our lunches based on whatever we happen to feel like that day (usually Ohio City Pasta, omg amazing). While we used to only go to the Public Market as an occasional outing, we have since turned it into a regular part of our lives.

I’m not writing this to be sanctimonious. Shopping local can be expensive and sometimes inconvenient.  I am not asking everyone to abandon Target and only get non-bleached paper towels at the co-op. I don’t shop local all the time. I’ve got a Starbucks coffee on my desk right now.  But what I’ve been working harder at over the last year is making local businesses a routine part of my family’s every day life, so that supporting a local business isn’t just what we do in our day to day lives, not some isolated novelty.

If our community wants to see these small businesses move forward, we have to spend our money at these small businesses. Yelp posts about how charming the business is doesn’t go very far. It is a kick to the gut, watching small businesses that are so important to us, have to close when the public’s spending doesn’t match its professed fondness.

So start making small changes. Make small business the priority you claim it to be.

When you are going on a coffee date with a friend, instead of immediately offering to meet at the ‘bux, consider instead: Commonplace Coffee, Zeke’s, Big Dog Coffee, Constellation Coffee, Coffee Tree Roasters, 21st Street Coffee, Anchor & Anvil Coffee Bar or Lili Cafe.

When you are picking up coffee to brew at home, instead of grabbing the bag of Dunkin, consider instead beans from: Coffee 19, Caffe D’Amore, La Prima Espresso or Nicholas Coffee Co.

When you’re running out to pick up lunch on a workday, instead of grabbing Subway, consider: Umbrella Cafe, Madonna’s, Bluebird Kitchen, Market Square Grocery or Craftwork Kitchen.

When you’re picking up a birthday gift & card, instead of running to CVS, consider: Wild Card, Kards Unlimited, or make a point to stop over at one of the many sessions of I Made it Market!

When you’re ordering pizza for Superbowl Sunday, instead of calling Domino’s, consider: Rialto’s, Fiore’s, Cestone’s, Spak Bros. or (if you’re feeling fancy) Pizza Taglio.

It’s a little tougher in the suburbs, but when you’re in the city, there are small businesses everywhere. It’s not enough to profess our love for them on the internet. If we want them to thrive, we need to spend our money there as part of our everyday lives.
